The acceptance rate generally refers to the percentage of students who applied who were accepted.
The same goes for the medical school admission, but recently, communities or websites that prepare and provide medical school admission information tend to use the percentage of final successful applicants as the acceptance rate.
This change is expected to have occurred for the following two reasons.
First, the data report provided by AAMC excludes information on admitted applicants and provides only information on applicants and matriculants. Therefore, it is hard to determine the percentage of accepted applicants.
Second, due to the nature of the medical school admissions process, the acceptance rate may not have much meaning.
During the medical school admissions process, relatively few applicants are invited to an interview after applying to medical school. Only invited applicants have chance to be accepted. The percentage of invited applicants for interview can also be important information for students preparing for medical school.
Therefore, we want to compare medical schools using both acceptance and interview rates. To avoid confusion:
- Acceptance rate: Percentage of applicants who were finally matriculated
- Interview rate: percentage of applicants invited to an interview
